Feeding South Florida – Starting this August

Hunger does not discriminate. It knows no race, religion or age. Over 60 percent of the 706,000 individuals Feeding South Florida serve have at least one working adult in the household. Many families are underemployed, supporting multiple generations, or may have fallen on hard times and need a little help to get by. Feeding South Florida mission is to end hunger in South Florida by providing immediate access to nutritious food, leading hunger, and poverty advocacy efforts, and transforming lives through innovative programming and education.

That is why Feeding South Florida is hosting a series of cooking classes in August at its Palm Beach County warehouse in Boynton Beach that provides 85,000 meals to people in the four counties that Feeding South Florida serves (Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties). The kitchen advances Feeding South Florida’s mission of ending hunger in South Florida by serving up to 20,200 meals per day for children’s after-school and summer programs, meals for older adults and medically tailored meals.

During each class, participants will have the opportunity to gain hands-on culinary experience with Feeding South Florida’s Director of Culinary Services Susan Taves and take their creations home to enjoy.

Feeding South Florida’s upcoming cooking classes include:

Taco Tuesday | Tuesday, Aug. 15, 6-7:30 p.m.

Participants will learn how to prepare mouthwatering homemade tortillas and a delicious pasilla chile sauce. Chicken and mushroom fillings will be available along with the traditional taco toppings to prepare and enjoy.

Cost: $70 per person / 18+ years of age

A Tarte for Two | Saturday, Aug. 19, 2-3 p.m.

Learn how to prepare a flaky delicious crust for an apple filling and transform it into a sensational tart. Participants can pair it with ice cream, cheddar cheese or salty caramel for a fabulous addition when they take home their masterpiece for dessert.

Cost: $55 for two (18+ years of age and one minor)

Sushi Workshop | Friday, Aug. 25, 6-7:30 p.m.

Learn the fundamentals of sushi and prepare traditional Japanese sushi rice. Participants will test their skills as a couple and learn to make vegetarian and spicy tuna nori rolls, nigiri sushi and more using centuries-old techniques.

Cost: $70 per person / 18+ years of age
